Emjens thread about strong visuals reminded me about the two Work of the director DVDs i got for christmas.

There's three out at the moment covering the work of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry.

I got the Jonze and Cunningham ones. They are my favourite music video and commercial directors and i find their work amazingly inspiring. Both the DVDs come with a book full full of the directors artwork and interviews. The Spike Jonze one has a bunch of documentaries he's made along with the music videos. THe Chris Cunningham DVD is a little lighter on content than it could of been but its great to see his videos in pristine quality.

I liked the DVDs so much i am going to buy the Michel Gondry one as well.

Has anyone else got these DVDs? What do you think of these directors work?

    What did spike jonze do?

I saw the Cunningham dvd at one of my friends houses, I'm going to borrow it from him.

Anyways, cunningham is very talented at creating visuals - sickening visuals. I'd like to have him as my DOP. I do think he's more of a very creative person than a great director though - although I don't know what he'll do with a movie.

You would of seen a few of Spike Jonzes videos without realising. He did

    Beastie Boys - Sabotage
    Weezer - Buddy Holly
    Pharcyde - Drop
Bjork - Its Oh So Quiet
FAt boy slim - Weapon of Choice (the one with Christopher Walken dancing round a hotel)
Daft Punk - Da Funk - (the one with a man/dog with a broken leg walking round new york)

THese are his most famous videos and probably some of the most influential music videos ever made.

    Also as a film director
    Being John Malkovich (as mentioned)
    Adapatation

Man, Jonez did 'Buddy Holly' That's one of my faves songs/videos ever.

Didn't he do the other Fatboy Slim video-Praise You? I think he's the 'leader' of the group that are dancing round like a bunch of idiots.

    Yeah he's the main dancer.

Roman Coppola actually directed it but the genius of it does lie with Spike Jonze.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that Gondry is the best of the bunch. His dvd is superb.

I've seen portions of all the DVD's, most from Michel Gondry's. I was impressed with his flashy effects, but in my opinion, it got old pretty fast. The only thing I admired from Cunningham was the artists he's done videos for : Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, but I found his videos to be somewhat darkly pretentious to an overbearing extent. I've loved all of Jonze's features (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) and I believe he is the best one of the three, because he has proved himself in all medians; shorts, videos, and features. Either way, the three formed an amazing company that will definitely produce some of the most original material for decades.
